Walkers raising funds for forces charities took in picturesque countryside as they made their way around three routes on Sunday 25th July 2010.
The Bury Challenge Walks, in aid of four forces charities - The Royal Anglian Regiment Benevolent Socirty, the RAF Benevolent Fund, ABF The Soldiers Charity and the Royal British Legion - set off from the town's rugby club.
Bury Town Council chairman Bob Cockle, started the 15.5 mile route in the morning, while walkers also took on 26 mile and 6.2 mile courses. 'The walks were very well attended by people of all ages - some of whom had travelled from some distance to take part,' said Cllr Cockle.
Catherine Buchanan, who organised the walks with Jane Patton, said entrants had travelled from as far afield as Aberdeen and Holland.
'As well as raising money for forces charities we wanted to show what Bury has to offer. Each walk went through the town centre and a lot of people said they had no idea it was such a nice town- and that they'd be back.' she said.
The walks, which will be held again next year, raised more than £1,000.
Bury St Edmunds’ long-established links with the forces was instrumental in the choice of charities to support. With Forces bases at nearby Mildenhall, Lakenheatth and Honington funds raised from the Challenge Walks will be donated to the Royal British Legion etc...
The 2011 event will be on May 1st, hosted by the Rugby Club. There will be a half-marathon (starting in the Abbey Gardens and finishing near the Rugby Club) for runners and three lengths of Challenge Walk (starting and finishing at the Rugby Club).
